About Us

Living in Tanzania!

In a whirlwind of a week in early February 2014 I applied for a job, was interviewed and offered that job within 5 days. I had been mulling the job over for a couple of weeks but this job was no standard teaching job.

This job has entailed a move…….. a move from Milton Keynes in the South East of England to the city of Mwanza in northern Tanzania.

It  has meant moving from a job in leafy Oxfordshire to a city in the mountains on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Above all it meant leaving family and friends, a church I been a member of since 1988 and the comforts of home.

I had long held a desire to teach in Africa – so now I am realising a dream. I never believed that pushing on the door would see it burst open before me. As Christians we believe that God has called us to this place and so on here we  are.

So in the words of the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins “I’m going on an adventure”

  2. What an adventure you are on! Thanks for stopping by my blog … I actually have some photos from Tanzania on there somewhere, as well as a short post on a hike we took on my main blog One Foot Out the Door (lexklein.wordpress.com). My stories and photos pale in comparison to what you are experiencing daily, I am sure!

  3. Have fun… enjoy God’s bountiful creation and the good things. You can’t do much to change the bad, apart from setting the positive example of a believer! Man, I could do with sleeping under the African stars again, around a campfire, photographing the Milky way and the Southern Cross! 😉

  11. a bit jealous, i admit.. good luck in the future and please think about the poor people over there.. I’ve been to Kenia, loved the country but when i got back home, I’ve cried for 3 days because i think it’s so unfair how the wealth in the world is divided. Also the corrupt government doesn’t makes it easier. I’ve hurt Tanzania is even more poor.

    • The school I’m going to runs a Saturday School free for AIDS orphans and others – free English lessons, swimming, sports and Computer lessons. It’s a little way to give back to the community.

  19. Hello newest Spikey! I know, a bit corny, eh, but that’s the term that has come to stick for those folk who are part of the clan known to be followers of Uncle Spike 🙂

Thank you… I really appreciate that as I for one, know how many interesting and entertaining blogs are out there.

My aim is to deliver an eclectic offering of posts, from my ‘point n shoot’ attempts at basic photography, to the sharing of my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day to day happenings here on the farm. Oh, plus a few observations on life as I see it, thrown in for good measure.

My promise to you is not to be overbearing, just a couple of posts a day, maybe 3 at weekends if I have something special to share. But if you are at a loose end one day, maybe you’ll enjoy trawling through some of my older stuff too. I have added plenty of categories to help in said digging process.

Thanks again and hope you have a great day…

  24. Gosh, five days to make a decision like that is so crazy – and all the more because you are bringing your entire family with you!! I did something similar with Australia to Greenland but that was just myself and my partner… I’m not sure I could have done it with children…. =)

    • Thanks – enjoy Thailand I briefly passed between the two Bangkok airports last summer – I spent a brief time in Bangkok. Eight hours to be precise – but I did travel across the city from one airport to another and pass through customs – so I can honestly say I’ve been to Thailand.
